This coming Sunday is a time to celebrate the birth of the Christian Church. The story of Pentecost is found in Acts 2.
In his passionate sermon, Peter quotes the Old Testament prophet Joel to proclaim the word of God: “I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.”
Despite ongoing human efforts to create hierarchy and to justify inequality, the good news keeps breaking through that full freedom in Christ is for the young and old, male and female, the powerful and the powerless. Otherwise, it would not be good news at all.
I look forward to sharing in the birthday celebration of the universal Church with the red-clad congregation at Chattanooga’s First Baptist Church on Sunday morning.
