It’s time for every American to make a choice.

President Trump’s supporters’ violent, riotous and treasonous behavior, and his blessing of their efforts, created a moment in time for which every citizen must give an account.

Not since 1814, when British troops burned the U.S. Capitol, has America seen such mob insurrection and treasonous destruction of the people’s house. It has left our country with an essential and important decision to make.

The choice is simple. The choice is not between Republican and Democrat. The choice is not between conservative and liberal. The choice is simply between good and evil.

Jesus once said, “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him” (Matthew 12:35).

The behavior witnessed in our nation’s capital is the outpouring of evil from a small and vile man.

Prophets and saints have been denouncing this evil for the last four years. They decried the Muslim ban, racist language, construction of a wall, children caged, white supremacists praised, misogyny overlooked, peaceful protesters teargassed, and basic tenets of our republic compromised.

Even after a free and fair election, President Trump and his allies chose to foster doubt in our democratic system and to incite violence.

However, this situation began well before the election was called for Joe Biden. The evil witnessed this week was a product of an unrestrained support of evil over the last four years.

America, we stand at a crossroads. There are only two paths forward and every one of us must make a choice.

Again, this is not a choice between political parties. Both Republicans and Democrats must choose what kind of society and people we want to be from this day forward.

Again, Jesus: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it” (Matthew 7:13-14).

For years now, people of good faith have been sounding an alarm. They warned their fellow citizens about the road – one filled with bigotry, hate and white supremacy. It was a wide path leading the country towards destruction.

On Wednesday, in the U.S. Capitol, America came one step closer to destruction. If good men and women do not stand up against this expression of tyranny, then we have only ourselves to blame.

Eighteenth-century Irish statesman Edmund Burke declared, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” The moment is now for people of good faith to stand up, speak out and step up.

Our democracy can no longer afford silence or capitulation. We need true patriots to rise up, seeking a new direction in order to bring peace, prosperity and justice for all citizens.

America, it’s time to make a choice.

The future of our country depends on our response.

Over the next few days, Good Faith Media will publish a number of articles written by thoughtful and insightful authors addressing the chaos, carnage and hypocrisy witnessed at the U.S. Capitol.

We are a better country – we are a better people – than what we witnessed this week.
