Atheism is most common among Generation Z, while Christian affiliation is most common among Boomers and Elders, according to a Barna Group report released on Jan. 24.
Thirteen percent of respondents in Generation Z (born 1999 to 2015) said they are atheists.
By comparison, 7 percent of Millennials (born 1984 to 1998), 6 percent of both Generation X (born 1965 to 1983) and Elders (born prior to 1946), and 5 percent of Boomers (born 1946 to 1964) did so.
Christian affiliation was highest among Elders and Boomers (both at 75 percent) followed by Generation X and Millennials (both at 65 percent), and Generation Z (59 percent).
Agnosticism was most common among Generation Z and Millennials (both at 8 percent), compared to 7 percent of Generation X, 5 percent of Elders and 4 percent of Boomers.
Generation X had the highest number of “nones” (people who don’t affiliate with any religious tradition) at 17 percent, followed by Millennials (15 percent), Generation Z (14 percent), Boomers (11 percent) and Elders (9 percent).
