In 2000, when the Southern Baptist Convention revised the time-honored 1963 faith statement, it moved away from the historic Baptist commitment of confessions of faith toward creedal religion.
One SBC official said that the adoption of the new statement meant, “You don’t have a right to believe whatever you want to believe, and still call yourself a Southern Baptist.”
A seminary president said, “We expect those who will serve our agencies to believe this.”
The Baptist Center for Ethics moved swiftly to produce an online curriculum to equip churches with a resource to address the changes in the Baptist Faith & Message statement.
Lesson topics included Jesus as the criterion for interpreting the Bible, soul competency, local church autonomy, the separation of church and state, women in ministry, equality in marriage and servant leadership.
Lesson writers included Charles Wade, Michael Clingenpeel, Carolyn Weatherford Crumpler, Marv Knox, Karen Johnson Zurheide and Mike Smith.
