Baptist Center for Ethics Executive Director Robert Parham is recuperating at his home in Nashville, Tenn., one month after being diagnosed with acute leukemia.
Parham, 51, was hospitalized March 7 with a very low white-blood-cell count. He had gone to his doctor with lingering flu-like symptoms following his return from a trip visiting tsunami-stricken areas in Asia.
Doctors at Vanderbilt Medical Center debated whether the condition was caused by an infectious disease before a bone-marrow biopsy yielded a definitive diagnosis.
Parham’s test results improved enough that he was able to leave the hospital a week ago. However, he is still receiving chemotherapy treatment at his home.
Parham met briefly at his home with BCE staff Tuesday for the first time since his hospitalization. He said his prognosis appears good, but his doctors are monitoring a number of variables.
He has lost weight and is working to regain body mass. He tires quickly and is not yet able to handle a large volume of phone calls. He is unable to respond to all e-mails, due to the volume he has received.
