“Born again” or evangelical Christians who affiliate with the Republican Party are the most likely group within the GOP to say Donald Trump’s endorsement of 2022 midterm candidates is most important to them.
This was one of the findings from a Yahoo News / YouGov survey conducted in late January and published on Jan. 27.
Nearly two-thirds (64%) of Republican respondents who identify as “born again” / evangelical affirmed that Trump’s endorsement was most important, while 18% said the endorsement of other GOP leaders was most important.
By comparison, 50% of Republicans who don’t identify as “born again” or evangelical said Trump’s endorsement was most important and 28% that the endorsement of other GOP leaders was most important.
Overall, 56% of all Republicans said Trump’s endorsement and 23% other Republican leaders’ endorsement mattered most to them.
“Half (50 percent) [of all Republican respondents] say Trump was ‘the best Republican president’ — far better than George H.W. Bush (4 percent) and his son George W. Bush (9 percent), and significantly better even than conservative icon Ronald Reagan (37 percent),” the report said. “Eighty-two percent rate Trump favorably, and 83 percent say they would vote for him in a rematch with Biden.”
