Sunrise on Jekyll Island’s Driftwood Beach during a staff retreat for Baptists Today … the beachfront on the northeast end of the island is a twisted mass of dead trees, some standing and some fallen, some unmoved for a hundred years, some washed ashore.

The rising tide washes through branches and swirls around roots long dead but still firm, while wind and salt carve their initials into red cedar and live oak.

The gritty grandeur and haunting splendor of the place is a reminder that shorelines shift and the world about us changes, but life marches on, and sometimes the sharp edges of wind and wave may turn bleakness to unexpected beauty.
