Charles McGathy is pastor of First Baptist Church of Madison, North Carolina. Prior to that, he served as a Navy chaplain for 23 years.
- Where did you grow up?
In the years of my life prior to college, my father worked for the Air Force, NASA and the Navy. So, I spent those years in Fort Walton Beach, Florida; Houston, Texas; and Orlando, Florida.
- What is your favorite verse, book or story in the Bible? Why?
It’s a toss-up between the parable of the “Good Samaritan” and the parable of the “Prodigal Son.”
These lessons taught by Jesus always challenge me toward a better understanding of God’s grace.
- What is your favorite movie? Why?
“Gettysburg” (1993).
This movie captures the foundational history of the United States and brings forth the arguments, both religious and political, that we continue to struggle over today.
- Who are three people you admire?
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Martin Luther King Jr., Suzii Paynter.
- What is one little-known fact about yourself?
I adopted the name “Chuck” when I joined the Navy in order to avoid being called “Charlie Chaplain.” It didn’t work.
