Doyle Sager is the senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Jefferson City, Missouri.
1. Where did you grow up?
On a farm in northwest Missouri, near Albany (about an hour north of Kansas City).
2. What is your favorite verse, book or story in the Bible? Why?
Galatians 5:22-23.
This is my life text because it focuses on the balance between supernatural growth (grace) and our intentionality and garden-tending (works).
3. What is your favorite movie? Why?
It is a tie between “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Shawshank Redemption.”
“Mockingbird” because it captures the essence of both embedded racism and courage. “Shawshank” because it teaches us how free people can be very enslaved and how imprisoned persons can be very free.
4. Who are three people you admire?
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jimmy Carter and Krista Tippett (host of “On Being” on public radio).
5. What is one little-known fact about yourself?
Being raised on a farm, I got my start in public speaking in FFA (formerly, Future Farmers of America) speech contests.
