Elmo Familiaran is the associate regional pastor and area minister for the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey.

Elmo’s articles that have appeared on are available here.

1. Where did you grow up?

The Philippines – my spiritual home is the Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches, the sister denomination of ABCUSA.

2. What is your favorite verse, story or book in the Bible?

The Sermon on the Mount.

In it is distilled the core teachings of Jesus on discipleship and the life in the kingdom.

3. What is your favorite movie?

One of my favorite movies is “Gandhi.”

In that film is powerfully portrayed how one simple man, with indefatigable passion for justice and clarity of vision for a better tomorrow, can drive a colonial power away and transform an entire nation without lifting a finger in anger.

4. Who are three people you admire?

Moley G. Familiaran (my father who served previously as ABCUSA’s deputy general secretary for Cooperative Christianity); J.S. Bach and Martin Luther King Jr.

5. What is one little-known fact about you?

I had an early passion for medicine and surgery, pursued it with one-mindedness, became a registered nurse, earning a bachelor of science in nursing in preparation for medical school. Three months before entering medical school, I experienced a dramatic call to ministry at the Baptist Youth World Congress held in Manila in 1978.
