Jayzel Jayakaram is president of the Baptist Association of South Africa.

1. Where did you grow up?

In a farming community in Glendale and Stanger, in the northern parts of Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa.

2. What is your favorite story? Why?

John 21:1.

When all else fails, listen to the voice of Jesus and be ready for the change.

3. What is your favorite movie? Why?

“Long Walk to Freedom.”

Nelson Mandela never gave up in spite of all the adversaries he faced, and knowing that I was part of the struggle, taking part in every possible protest that I could in days of apartheid, and yet I never met my hero.

4. Who are three people you admire?

Paul Silvanus (a missionary in India), Dixon James (my Bible school principle and mentor) and my family (my wife, Fiona, and my sons, Nevin and Jody).

5. What is one little-known fact about you?

I become a deacon at the age of 17 at the Stanger Manor Church.
