Mary Alice Birdwhistell is senior pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Waco, Texas.
1. Where did you grow up?
Lawrenceburg in central Kentucky.
2. What is your favorite verse, book or story in the Bible? Why?
I am especially drawn to Ephesians 3:20-21.
It calls me to God-sized dreams that are so much bigger than what I would ask for or imagine on my own.
3. What is your favorite movie? Why?
“The Little Mermaid.”
It’s about a red-headed girl, one of those “bright young women, sick of swimmin’, ready to stand…,” who dares to become part of a brave and beautiful new world.
4. Who are three people you admire?
Julie Pennington-Russell, Jack (“Doc”) Birdwhistell (my late uncle, a beloved professor and campus minister for many years at Georgetown College in Kentucky) and the family of faith at Calvary Baptist Church.
5. What is one little-known fact about yourself?
I have a bone disorder (osteogenesis imperfecta) that causes my bones to break easily, and I’ve broken more than 30 bones. Gratefully, I just celebrated being 10 years strong!
