The Gospel is too big for us. It calls us to do things we are unwilling to do.
Love our enemies? It’s hard enough to love all of our family and friends.
Do not store up treasures on earth? But what about a comfortable retirement?
If we refuse to forgive others, God will not forgive us? But Jesus said that before so-and-so was born. Surely, I’m not expected to forgive him/her for what he/she did to me.
So the reality is that most of us who claim to be followers of Jesus expend a lot of effort in trying to soften the Gospel, to give it a better personal fit. And, on occasion, we even admit it.
