My friend and mentor Bill Neal had a good response to critics who asked why he included “negative stuff” in the newspaper he edited: “Have you read the Bible lately?”
Indeed, neither ancient times nor ours are marked by only positive attitudes and activities. The Bible is filled with accounts of anger, hostility, betrayal and division. Sadly, so is the world in which we live today.
That is why the headline of Christmas is such an important message. A better way — the way of peace, love and joy — is ushered in and made available to us through the coming of the Christ Child.
As the angelic messenger said to the startled shepherds: “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.”
It was “good news” then and remains so now. Merry Christmas!
