During this time that brings so much joy to so many, it is important to remember that there are those for whom all is not merry and bright. Suffering in many forms does not take a holiday — or even a holy day.

The Christmas story is rooted in an event that took place in a time of turmoil and injustice. Hatred, rejection and hostility did not pass away. Yet a punctuation mark was placed on history to affirm that ultimately love does and will reign above all else.

Amid our festivities this week, let us extend compassion and care to those who are lonely, hurting and anxious. May the good news of Christmas this year bring comfort even where it cannot bring joy.
