EthicsDaily.com is coming again to your television, this time courtesy of a new network that focuses on African Americans.
“Beneath the Skin: Baptists and Racism,” EthicsDaily.com’s award-winning documentary, will be broadcast multiple times in late July and early August on Soul of the South Network (SSN).
These broadcasts will be followed later in August with airings of two of EthicsDaily.com’s other documentaries: “Through the Door,” on faith and prisons, and “Gospel Without Borders,” on faith and immigration.
Airdates for the August documentaries are forthcoming.
“Beneath the Skin” will air Monday, July 28, at 8 p.m. CST, and again at midnight. It will re-air Friday, Aug. 1, at 8 p.m. CST, followed by another midnight showing. The final airing will be Sunday, Aug. 3, at 6 p.m. CST.
SSN launched in May 2013 after securing $10 million from private investors and from the state of Arkansas, where it is headquartered in a 30,000-square-foot facility in Little Rock.
SSN currently has 16 stations carrying its programming. Its largest affiliate, WKOB in New York City, reaches nearly 7.5 million homes. The next largest affiliate, WOCK in Chicago, reaches 3.5 million homes.
Other affiliates operate in Dallas-Fort Worth, Miami, Austin, Dayton and Baton Rouge, to name a few. SSN programming reaches more than 20 million homes.
Markets outside the south, like Chicago, are termed “sister regions” by SSN. The network plans to add more stations to its roster soon, including the markets for Detroit, Nashville, Atlanta, Houston and Washington, D.C.
SSN focuses on black Americans, offering news, cultural and entertainment programming.
Shows include “D.C. Breakdown,” a political talk show broadcast from Washington, D.C., and “Great Gospel Morning,” a two-hour morning show hosted by Leah Patterson, which aims to start viewers’ days with positive stories and uplifting music.
Doug McHenry, SSN’s president, is a well-known producer. After taking degrees from Stanford and Harvard, McHenry went on to produce a number of films, including “New Jack City” and “Jason’s Lyric.” He also produced the TV series “Malcolm & Eddie.”
“We at Soul of the South Television are truly blessed and proud to present the quality programs developed and produced by EthicsDaily,” McHenry said.
“It’s rare to have Christian inspired programming that so readily speaks to challenges which face all of us today, both Christian and non-Christians alike using the gospel to inspire and give us insight on how to approach seemingly intractable problems,” he said. “In every program we are reminded that with faith and love there is no canyon of discord and enmity that cannot be bridged.”
“Beneath the Skin” took home the Best Documentary award at the 2008 International Black Film Festival of Nashville. It has been screened at national denominational gatherings across the country.
It was used in April by the Metropolitan Detroit Association of American Baptist Churches to address the issue of racism.
SSN will broadcast the long version of the film, which is 47 minutes.
“We are delighted to have a synergistic partnership with SSN on these documentaries,” said Robert Parham, executive editor of EthicsDaily.com. “SSN has an entrepreneurial and energetic spirit, which we find energizing.”
“This is a significant step forward in our plans to provide content for TV, whether broadcast TV or digital networks,” Parham said.
