The trauma of living through detainment as an immigrant, being stripped of your dignity and treated like you are less than human, is enough to make anyone repress their feelings and avoid any danger of bringing that back to the surface. And yet, day after day at a makeshift respite tent outside the entrance to the driveway of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Field Office in Dallas, Texas, Angela Andrade does just that. She remembers what it was like to be vulnerable and afraid as an immigrant without legal status in the United States. She greets migrants who are coming for their required check-ins at the field office and helps prepare them and their families for what might happen next when one or more of them is detained, a family is torn apart, and they have no idea how to manage the separation.

The comfort she brings and the aid she and her community organizers provide as volunteers in these moments are signs of God’s presence in the midst of unfathomable circumstances.
