Brad Onishi is one of the most significant voices countering Christian nationalism today.
After serving at an evangelical megachurch in Southern California and questioning the militarization of the Christian faith following 9/11, Onishi began the process of deconstruction. He left congregational ministry to study religion more seriously at Oxford. When asked about this time, he said, “I was scared to death because I was going to be around nonbelievers, and perhaps even more startling, Mainline Christians, who were going to talk about faith in ways that I have been told were baseless and hollow. What I found, though, was something quite the opposite — friends, colleagues, and interlocutors who helped me become a person of faith for the first time.”
Onish is currently working on a new book that will be released in 2026 about a movement toward an American monarchy. This movement includes tech oligarchs, right-wing Catholics, and reconstructionist Reformed Protestants coalescing around the idea that instead of breaking away from a king, we need a second American revolution to install one.
