Daphny Milligan’s life and witness in the world are worth celebrating. When I met Daphny, she was in Lovely Village’s job training program and had lost custody of her four children due to addiction. From the courtroom to the classroom, she rebuilt her life from the impact of sexual trauma, addiction, and systemic oppression as a Black woman. Daphny’s faith continued to be a firm foundation, as she clung to prayer and the belief that she was worth more than the realities of what she had been handed. Through each opportunity, she kept faith that small steps in the right direction would empower change.

After graduating from our program, she earned a job at Goodwill Industries, where she gained hard skills and enrolled in higher education, becoming a licensed chemical dependency counselor and pursuing her bachelor’s degree in organizational psychology. Daphny serves as our Community Care Coordinator, coming full circle back to Lovely Village as a staff member. She has regained custody of all her children, and her oldest is in his second year of university.

Emily Mills is co-founder and Chief Ideation Officer of Lovely Village, which provides comprehensive, trauma-informed care and safe housing for women and children impacted by sexual trauma and exploitation.
