Elket Rodriguez is a passionate, faith-filled, and brilliant advocate. He has a unique ability to fight cynicism in our dispiriting times through humor and perseverance. His personality and unique experiences have placed him in an ideal position to speak up for the rights of migrants and people of faith called to engage with the most critical and controversial crisis of our times.
When I was first introduced to Elket, it was clear he was a very spirit-led advocate. His career had included journalism, immigration law practitioner, legislative counsel, and work at First Baptist Midland, TX. I knew his love for his homeland of Puerto Rico and his decision to leave the island meant he had faced adversity and followed God’s leading at great cost.
In the years since, I’ve seen Elket move with ease in refugee camps along the Rio Grande, in courtrooms, churches of all kinds, and in the halls of Congress. His advocacy is matched by his empathy and compassion. His easy-going nature and good humor help build bridges across divides. He is a gift to our type of Baptists and the larger Christian advocacy world. His love for migrants and the marginalized might be eclipsed only by his love for his family, baseball, and Puerto Rico.
