According to a recent Gallup poll, for the first time in five years, the U.S. public views the Democratic Party as more likely than the Republican Party to keep the country prosperous—47% to 43%, respectively. In the 2020 poll, the results were essentially tied, with 48% saying Democrats and 47% saying Republicans had the better shot at advancing prosperity. Republicans have held a significant lead on this question since 2013.

The GOP continues to hold an advantage in the public’s mind when it comes to protecting the nation from international terrorism and military threats. The survey found Republicans favored over Democrats on that issue by a margin of 48% to 41%.

Respondents were also asked what they most liked and disliked about each party. In the broad category of “issue positions,” 30% said they liked those of the Republicans, while 20% said they liked the Democrats’ positions. Even so, Democrats hold a 44% to 24% lead over Republicans among respondents who said they favor their values and political philosophy.

Despite these results, both parties remain underwater with the public on overall favorability. The Republicans are viewed favorably by 40% of respondents, while 37% view the Democrats favorably. The last time at least half of the country viewed a political party positively was in 2020, when 51% held a favorable opinion of the Republicans.

Before that, you have to go back to November 2013 to find a political party above the 50% threshold, when 51% viewed the Democrats favorably.
