Retired pastor Bruce C. Salmon invites readers to explore the biblical narrative at a deeper level in Spelunking Scripture: Christmas—Exploring Important Passages of the Bible and Spelunking Scripture: The Letters of Paul—Exploring Important Passages of the Bible.
The first book in the “Spelunking Scripture” series focuses mostly on the account of Jesus’ birth as told in the Gospel of Luke. He also digs into the subsequent visit of the wise men, the prophecy in Isaiah 9 about a child being born unto us, and the prologue to John’s gospel.
After briefly introducing each pertinent scripture passage related to the Christmas story, Salmon illustrates each passage with commentary gleaned from the more than 1,500 sermons he preached during his 33 years as pastor at Village Baptist Church in Bowie, Maryland.
In the second book, Salmon digs into the 13 letters of the New Testament attributed to Paul that were mostly written for specific churches (or groups of churches) with a few were addressed to specific individuals.
Salmon examines the way in which Paul’s letters convey truth about God’s intentions for our lives while acknowledging that not every word Paul writes has equal value—some words from his epistles convey the cultural conditions of the times rather than God’s purposes.
Salmon served for 33 years as pastor of Village Baptist Church in Bowie, Maryland. During that time, he preached almost 1,500 original Sunday morning sermons, including 295 sermons based on the letters of Paul. For the last 18 years of his ministry, he taught a Sunday morning pastor’s class and led winter, summer and Lenten Sunday evening adult studies.
He received his Bachelor of Arts with a major in English from Baylor University and the Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He also received the Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Bowie State University, with a specialization in Clinical Pastoral Counseling. Salmon has served on several committees of the D.C. Baptist Convention and on a number of commissions of the Baptist World Alliance.
