Too often, women are not permitted to tell their own stories, especially within religious traditions. Tehom Center Publishing’s newest book turns this notion on its head with Rebecca Craig’s Through Her Eyes: Biblical Women Speak.
According to New York Times Bestselling author of A Well-Trained Wife, Tia Levings: “Through Her Eyes centers the women of the Bible in the stories they lived, reimagined in their own voices, exploring the female narrative long obscured in patriarchal presentations of scripture. The resilience and humanity in these pages open a window into perspectives to help us navigate a world with relatable problems and dynamics present in any age. I loved seeing these women show up on the page, fleshed out and complex.”
That is why Through Her Eyes is the focus of today’s Belief Behind the Book. Belief Behind the Book is a feature that gives readers a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the beliefs—or what I call “the why”—behind books written by progressive spiritual leaders. Inspired by the Ministry from the Margins Books program, “Belief Behind the Book” shines a spotlight on why authors write the books they write, offering practical tips for readers to apply to their own belief systems.
Through Her Eyes: Biblical Women Speak is an anthology of short stories that brings the voices of twenty-five biblical women to life. Each story is told from the perspective of a different woman from scripture, shedding light on the choices they faced and the hardships they endured.
With thought-provoking discussion questions at the end of each chapter, this collection invites reflection on the often-overlooked contributions of women in the biblical narrative.
Rev. Rebecca J. Craig is an ELCA pastor, artist, and former Disney Feature Animation story developer. A graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Journalism) and Luther Seminary (M.Div), she brings a rich storytelling background to her ministry. She is the author of Once Upon a Nightmare: Through the Looking Glass of Narcissistic Abuse, and illustrator of the children’s book, Monty: A Tale of No Tail by A.H. Kay.
When asked why she wrote the book, Craig responded: “I wrote Through Her Eyes to give voice to biblical women whose suffering—abuse, trauma, injustice—has too often been silenced. I sensed a disconnect between how women were portrayed in scripture and how they were treated historically and today. I wanted people to see them as more than just plot tools. To see the suffering and challenges of their day reflected in the suffering and challenges women still face today.”
Continuing, she offers one practical takeaway for readers, saying, “When we truly listen to women’s stories—especially those long ignored or misrepresented—we begin to see scripture, faith and even ourselves differently. The stories in Through Her Eyes aren’t just ancient—they’re mirrors, calling us to justice, compassion, and transformation in our own time.”
Through Her Eyes reminds us that the sacred story is not whole until women speak. Their voices—once silenced—now rise with power, complexity, and truth.
Rebecca Craig’s work is more than a book; it’s an invitation. An invitation to listen, to learn and to let these ancient voices transform how we see scripture, faith and ourselves.
If we dare to hear them, then we will never read the Bible—or live our lives—the same way again.
