Campbell University Divinity School in Buies Creek, North Carolina, has announced it will establish the Center for Calling in Ministry “to develop programs that strengthen cultures of calling within churches, schools, and denominational organizations.” The center will be financially supported by a $10 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc.
The project is being developed in collaboration with Campbell’s Office of Spiritual Life and several external partner organizations. These include the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, Baptist Women in Ministry, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina, Baptist Women in Ministry of North Carolina, and Passport Camps.
According to a statement released about the grant, Dr. Barry Jones, dean of the Campbell Divinity School, identified four areas of focus for the project. The center’s activities will work to identify potential pastoral leaders among younger generations, strengthen congregational cultures of calling, bolster support for current congregational leaders, and secure additional funding to sustain these cultures.
Rev. Louisa Ward, Campbell University’s dean for spiritual life and campus minister, stated that “the nuanced and thoughtful ways this grant will enable the Divinity School to empower churches, support organizations and contribute to the work of calling within the life of the university is a tremendous gift.”
The grant is part of Lilly Endowment’s Pathways for Tomorrow Large-Scale Collaboration Initiative. In addition to Campbell, 44 other schools across the country received grants from the initiative, ranging from $2.5 million to $10 million.
