The rate of those in the United States with a positive view of immigration has increased significantly over the past year, according to a new Gallup poll. In the 2024 survey, 64% of respondents said that “immigration is a good thing.” According to a poll taken in June of this year, the rate had risen to 79%.
The shift is almost exclusively due to changes in Republican opinions on immigration. Those who identify with the GOP saw a 25% increase in positive views of immigration, from 39% in 2024 to 64% in 2025. Democrats saw a 5% increase in the past year, from 86% to 91%.
There are also notable changes in how U.S. respondents view particular policy proposals regarding immigration. The most popular proposals are those that give immigrants already in the country without documentation a path to citizenship, provided they meet specific requirements over a specified period.
More than four-fifths (85%) of respondents believe those who were brought to the country as children should be given opportunities to gain citizenship, up from 81% in 2024. For all people (children and adults) who are in the country without documentation, 78% of respondents believe they should be given a path to citizenship. This is up from 70% in 2024.
Once again, these changes are mainly driven by shifting Republican attitudes. In the 2024 survey, 64% of Republicans believed children brought here illegally should have a path to citizenship.
This year, 71% support paths to citizenship for these individuals. For all immigrants living in the U.S. illegally, 59% of Republicans believe in a path to citizenship, up from 46% in 2024.
Despite these changes in views on immigration, most Republicans (85%) approve of Donald Trump’s handling of immigration policy, with 97% of Democrats disapproving.
