Abba, Father by Leroy Spinks and Namaste, Newbie! by Jim Dant are the latest releases from Nurturing Faith books, the publishing imprint of Good Faith Media.
Thinkers from the second century onward have been obsessed with formulating a theory of the atonement, positing a variety of reasons why Jesus’ death was necessary: to ransom our souls, to make reparations for our offense to God’s honor, to pay our sin debt. In other words, the cross event was crucial for God to forgive us and make us his children.
Abba, Father invites us to rethink the meaning of Christ’s atonement by examining the teachings of Jesus found in the New Testament: Jesus did not speak of how the Father reconciles himself to us, but rather how we are to reconcile with the Father.
Spinks offers “a heartfelt and convincing argument that salvation in the New Testament is not founded on a legal theory, but on a family relationship,” said Stephen Finlan, pastor of The First Church of West Bridgewater, Massachusetts.
A retired pastor who lives near Chattanooga, Tennessee, Spinks has devoted himself to biblical studies and to reading histories and biographies. He is an experienced writer of Christian education curriculum and the author of The Jesus Lens (Nurturing Faith, 2018).
Reflecting on his initial forays into yoga, Dant encourages readers to learn alongside him as he reflects on the initial year of incorporating yoga into his daily life in Namaste, Newbie!
What equipment do I need? How will I ever learn the poses? Will my body really do that? Other concerns may be deeper: Will this conflict with my faith? Do I have to be vegan? How will yoga affect my life?
Dant’s book seeks to answer these queries in a helpful, yet humorous manner.
Inviting readers to laugh with, and at, him as he shares worries, missteps and fumbles, Dant hopes his journey will entice others to adopt a way of being that makes the world a better place for everyone.
Dant is the senior minister of the First Baptist Church, Greenville, South Carolina. In his spare time, he’s an Ironman triathlete, writer, conference speaker, tournament poker player, bass guitarist and Hebrew geek.
Abba, Father and Namaste, Newbie! are each available in paperback for $18 (with free shipping) from GFM’s bookstore. An e-book for both will be available on Amazon (Kindle) and Barnes and Noble (Nook) within a few weeks.
