The United States of America has historically been a beacon of freedom and justice for most of the world. For decades, America has stood by its allies in defending the rights and freedoms of all global citizens.  While America has never been perfect, the country has tried to right wrongs and improve the lives of others, both domestically and internationally. Unfortunately, after this week, the American beacon is flickering.

This week, on the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine, the U.S. voted against a European resolution at the United Nations condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Later in the week, the U.S. presented a resolution calling for an end to the war without condemning Russia’s actions.

Both resolutions passed, but U.S. policy towards the war has changed drastically. Russia, Israel, North Korea, Sudan, Belarus, Hungary and 11 other states joined the U.S. in voting against the European resolution.

NPR reported, “Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa said her country is exercising its ‘inherent right to self-defense’ following Russia’s invasion, which violates the U.N. Charter’s requirement that countries respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other nations.”

The votes were so alarming. It led Republican Senator John Curtis to state he was “deeply troubled” by the vote “which put us on the same side as Russia and North Korea.” He added, “These are not our friends. This posture is a dramatic shift from American ideals of freedom and democracy,”

The U.S.’s actions this week at the U.N. should concern every American citizen and communicate a terrifying message to the rest of the free world.

In his 2002 State of the Union address, President George W. Bush warned his fellow citizens of an “Axis of Evil,” including Iran, Iraq, and North Korea. Twenty-three years later, another “Axis of Evil” is emerging. This time, however, the “axis” may include the United States of America.

Last year, Merrill Matthews asked about the new “axis” emerging around the world. Matthews wrote at The Hill, “Today, there’s a different, four-country Axis of Evil: Russia, China, Iran and North Korea.” After this week’s actions at the U.N. and the Trump Administration’s admiration for these nations, the U.S. appears to be drifting closer and closer to the axis.

While Bush’s axis was a small threat to the world due to strong global alliances, the new axis has the potential for global domination. Why is this emerging axis so terrifying?

There is one simple answer: these countries all want more land, which means more resources.

Russia wants Ukraine.

China wants Taiwan.

Israel wants Gaza and the West Bank.

The United States, led by the Trump Administration, wants Canada, Greenland and the Panam Canal. For some reason, the administration has not mentioned Mexico.

China, Russia and the United States currently own a vast amount of the globe. Russia occupies 11% of the global landmass, China occupies 6.3%, and the United States lays claim to 6.1%. If the U.S. annexed Canada, it would double its land mass, placing it at the top of the landmass run. Canada currently occupies 6.1%.

While these land grabs make sense to authoritarian ideals and policies, they are terrifying for the rest of the world. With China and Russia renewing their partnership on the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Chinese President Xi Jinping affirmed his “no limits” partnership in a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.

The American president keeps teasing land grabs by Israel. Trump posted a disgusting AI-generated video of “Trump Gaza” this week on Truth Social. The video shows Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sunbathing on the beach in a resort-type setting.

Additionally, the video also “shows children running out of the rubble into a world of palm trees and luxury buildings, and a towering golden statue of Trump. It depicts men in apparent drag dancing in bikinis on the beach, Trump enjoying a belly dancer, and a man resembling Elon Musk being showered with cash in the form of U.S. currency.”

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly responded to NPR after the White House received pushback. “President Trump is a visionary,” she said, “and his plan to have the United States involved in Gaza’s rebuilding will allow for Palestinians to resettle in new, beautiful communities while improving conditions in the region for generations to come.”

Make no mistake about it: if Trump and Netanyahu have their way, this is simply another landgrab benefiting them both personally.

America as a beacon of freedom and justice is dimming right before our eyes. For now, long gone are the days when the world looked to the United States for hope.  Now, they watch and wonder, “Is America entering the Axis of Evil?”
