A San Antonio organization devoted to interfaith dialogue and civic engagement has chosen its new executive director, according to a statement. Interfaith San Antonio Alliance (ISAA) tapped the Rev. Bethany Hull Somers to lead the organization, founded in 2018 to increase cooperation for the city’s common good.
Hull Somers most recently served as pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in downtown San Antonio. According to a statement from ISAA, it was in that role that she “became widely known for her work at the intersection of faith and public life.” Some of her priorities in the role revolved around “housing insecurity, violence prevention, and community care for unhoused neighbors.”
She “brings a rare combination of wisdom, joy, collaborative leadership, and deep love for people,” said Garrett Vickrey, chair of the board for ISAA. “Her commitment to building bridges across differences and working toward the common good makes her uniquely suited to lead this organization into its next chapter.”
ISAA sponsors and promotes many events throughout the city to nurture bonds across faith traditions, including summits and potluck dinners. One of its signature events, the Festival of Faiths, features music, dance and food from across the religious landscape to promote greater understanding. Last year’s event drew more than 1,400 people.
“As our city continues to grow and change, the need for meaningful interfaith relationships and courageous public partnership has never been greater,” Hull Somers said. “I am honored to join Interfaith San Antonio Alliance in its work of cultivating understanding, cooperation, and shared responsibility across our diverse communities.”
