Days after 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by a federal agent in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a survey by Quinnipiac University asked Americans if the shooting was justified.

According to the new national poll, 53% of respondents say the shooting was unjustified, while 35% of those surveyed say it was justified. Another 12% of respondents chose not to share their opinion. Eighty-two percent of self-identified registered voters say they have seen the video of the fatal shooting, compared to 18% who say they have not viewed it.

Responses varied based on political party, with most Republicans saying the shooting was justified (77%) versus 10% who saw no rationale for the deadly encounter. On the other hand, most Democrats say the shooting was unjustified (92%) while 4% say they disagree. Among Independents, 59% say the shooting was justified compared to 28% who say the federal agent’s actions were lawful.

The responses from men were split (42%, justified; 44%, unjustified). A little less than one-third of women polled say the shooting was justified (30%), while 61% say it was not justified.

“The majority say the shots should not have been fired by the ICE agent,” Tim Malloy, Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst, said in a statement. “While more than one-third believe the shooting was justified.”

The poll, comprised of 1,133 self-identified registered voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points, also includes questions on voter approval of how U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is executing immigration laws, as well as Kristi Noem’s job as Secretary of Homeland Security.
