Most “White” evangelicals remain committed to President Donald Trump and his administration, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey. They overwhelmingly support his anti-DEI (75%) but pro-federal government cuts (75%) and tariffs agenda (67%).
Now in his second term, the think tank found more than two-thirds (72%) of ‘White evangelical Protestants’ surveyed approve of his current handling of the role. More than half of respondents (57%) say they trust his voice more than his predecessors. A majority (69%) also say top Trump administration officials’ ethics are “excellent or good.”
Conversely, most African American Protestants (88%), religiously unaffiliated adults (76%) and Hispanic Catholics (72%) find consensus in rating the ethical standards of Trump administration officials as “fair or poor.” The pattern remains largely unchanged when asked if these subgroups approve of how Trump is handling his role as president. They all overwhelmingly disapprove (85% of African American Protestants, 73% of Hispanic Catholics, and 74% of those who identify as religiously unaffiliated).
“These religious patterns largely reflect partisan differences. White evangelicals overwhelmingly identify as or lean Republican, as do smaller majorities of White nonevangelical Protestants and White Catholics,” Chip Rotolo, a research associate at Pew Research Center, wrote. “By contrast, most Black Protestants, Hispanic Catholics and religiously unaffiliated adults are Democrats or Democratic-leaning independents.”
Pew also noted that Trump’s job approval rating continues to decline among Americans in general, down seven percentage points since February. The same is true for several groups in particular: ”White” evangelicals, from 78% to 72%, African American Protestants, from 18% to 10%, ”White” Catholics, from 59% to 51%, and religiously unaffiliated Americans, from 33% to 26%, respectively.
