A new Gallup poll reports a “slim majority” of American adults (51%) believe changing genders is immoral. On the other hand, when asked, “Regardless of whether or not you think it should be legal, do you personally believe that in general it is morally acceptable or morally wrong to change one’s gender?” 44% say it is morally acceptable.
Concurrently, most U.S. adults polled support gender-affirming care for minors. Sixty-two percent of respondents favor treatments and medical procedures, and 61% voice support for psychological support, hormonal treatments and medical surgeries.
When women were asked, 48% say changing genders was morally acceptable. This is compared to only 39% of men who share the same sentiment.
Along political party lines, 81% of self-identified liberals, 44% of moderates, and 15% of conservatives say changing one’s gender is morally acceptable. Nearly three-quarters of Democrats (72%), 46% of Independents, and 11% of Republicans agree.
Gallup also asked those who identify as “nones,” Catholics, and Protestants/Other Christians their opinion. More than half of nones (67%), almost half of Catholics (42%), and a third of Protestants/ Other Christians (33%) say changing one’s gender is morally acceptable.
A slim majority of Americans believe that changing one’s gender is morally wrong,” Megan Brenan, a research consultant for Gallup, wrote. “Yet, a majority also oppose laws banning gender-affirming care to help minors align with their gender identity. This discrepancy could be because the questions about gender-affirming care specifically mention minors, while the question about the morality of changing one’s gender does not.”
